Sunderland close to agreeing deal for Juventus left-back
SUNDERLAND are close to finalising a deal for Juventus left-back Paolo De Ceglie.
The Black Cats have spent most of the summer searching for a new left-sided defender, but having missed out on a number of targets, De Ceglie is close to agreeing a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light.
The 26-year-old’s agent, Carlo Pallavicino, was in England yesterday, and while Stoke City have also registered an interest, Sunderland are on the verge of making De Ceglie their tenth senior signing of the summer.
Having graduated through the Juventus youth system, De Ceglie spent a season at Siena before breaking into the Turin club’s senior set-up in 2008.
He represented Italy in the Olympics in the same year, but rarely featured under Juventus boss Antonio Conte last season.
With Kwado Asamoah firmly established as Juventus’ first-choice left-back, De Ceglie has been deemed surplus to requirements and given permission to look elsewhere.
Sunderland targeted Benjamin Mendy and Lucas Orban at the start of the summer, but the pair spurned their advances to sign for Marseille and Bordeaux respectively.
Black Cats director of football Roberto de Fanti then tried to tie up a deal for Aly Cissokho, but the Frenchman is poised to complete a move to Liverpool next week after the Anfield club agreed the terms of a loan deal with his current employers, Valencia.
That forced de Fanti to look elsewhere again, and with his Italian links having led him to De Ceglie, it is hoped a transfer can be agreed at the start of next week.
