Hartlepool 1 Wycombe 2
HARTLEPOOL United remain winless in League Two this season after a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.
Chairboys’ substitute Max Kretzschmar scored two second-half goals to sink Pools and send them to an all-too-familiar feeling.
Pools, who scored five in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in midweek against Bradford, had the first chance on 17 minutes, when Andy Monkhouse’s shot was blocked.
They went even closer ten minutes later when, in a goalmouth scramble, Christian Burgess’s shot was knocked off the line.
The Chairboys first opening came on 40 minutes, when a ball from the left by Sam Wood evaded the on-rushing Steven Craig.
But the half-time introduction of Kretzschmar changed the game.
He sent over a corner on 47 minutes which Craig header over before opening the scoring on 49 minutes, the midfielder cracking a fine low finish into the bottom corner from 25 yards.
Flinders saved well from Stuart Lewis, before Kretzschmar struck again. This time, after Pools lost possession deep in the visitor’s half, the Chairboys broke away and the substitute took a pass and confidently clipped his finish past Flinders.
Pools got one back in added on time, when James Poole headed in from close range – their first goal of the season but it was too little too late.
