Hartlepool United 2 Accrington Stanley 1
HARTLEPOOL United won the battle of the Football League’s basement sides - enjoying a 2-1 win over Accrington at Victoria Park.
Victory was Pools’ first of the season in League Two, and it leaves the visitors four points adrift at the foot of the table.
For the opening half hour, there was very little of note going on.
But Pools took the lead on 30 minutes with the first chance of the game.
Andy Monkhouse rolled the ball to Jon Franks and his low shot found the far corner of the net.
Stanley had a chance to level on 40 minutes, left back Tom Aldred heading over from close range.
And Pools scored a second on 42 minutes. Matty Dolan fed Luke James and he set up Monkhouse to score from 12 yards.
Pools had a goal chalked off for offside on 54 minutes, with Monkhouse turning the ball in.
And Stanley got lifeline on 57 minutes. James Gray, the former Darlington player, got in behind the defence, held off Christian Burgess and clipped home.
Stanley had late chances to level – Flinders saved well at his near post from substitute Connor Mahoney and the keeper kept out a near post effort from a short corner.
But Pools saw it out as they defended in numbers.
