Mansfield Town 1 Hartlepool United 4
HARTLEPOOL UNITED romped to a convincing 4-1 win at Mansfield – demolishing the home side, who started the day eight games without defeat.
Pools, who lined up 4-5-1, scored four and could have easily doubled their tally.
Andy Monkhouse opened the scoring, drilling in from 25 yards after taking a pass from Michael Duckworth to set Pools on their way.
That was on eight minutes and they should have had a penalty when Luke James was felled in the area, only for the striker to be booked for diving.
As half-time approached, with Pools well on top, the second arrived.
This time, Jack Compton took lead from Monkhouse, cut inside from the right wing and fired in a left-footed shot from distance.
Mansfield put on two attacking subs at the break, but Pools were soon three up.
Compton’s deft free-kick from 22 yards curled over the defensive wall and into the net.
The Stags, who spent all afternoon lumping the ball forward, got a penalty on 75 minutes, harshly awarded against Sam Collins for handball and Sam Clucas scored.
Four minutes later, Pools scored again, James Poole getting a deserved goal. He was set up by Compton and rolled a low shot into the net from 20 yards.
