Team news: How they line up in Wear-Tyne derby
GUS POYET has surprisingly named Emanuele Giaccherini and Ki Sung-Yueng on the Sunderland bench for his first Wear-Tyne derby in charge against Newcastle United.
It is an unexpected move from the Sunderland boss, who has made four changes to the team which lost 4-0 at Swansea City eight days ago, and he has handed a shock debut to Italian left-back Andrea Dossena.
Phil Bardsley replaces Ondrej Celustka on the right of the defence, while Carlos Cuellar has been recalled at the expense of Valentin Roberge alongside John O'Shea at the heart of the back four.
There is also a spot for Jack Colback in the middle of midfield instead of Ki or Craig Gardner, while Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore are paired together in attack as Poyet looks to lead Sunderland to a first win of the Premier League season.
Fletcher and Altidore will be expected to cause problems for a makeshift Newcastle defence bereft of the suspended Mapu Yanga-Mbiwa and injured duo Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor.
Both Taylor and Coloccini, struggling with respective hamstring and groin problems, were given every chance to make the trip to the Stadium of Light but neither are involved in the match-day 18.
Young defender Paul Dummett, who prefers left-back, is the man expected to slot in to the middle of the defence with Mike Williamson.
Otherwise Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, keen to avenge the 3-0 defeat to Sunderland in April when Paolo Di Canio was in charge, field the same team which started the 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
Sunderland (4-4-2): Westwood; Bardsley, O'Shea, Cuellar, Dossena; Larsson, Cattermole, Colback, Johnson; Altidore, Fletcher. Subs: Mannone (gk), Ki, Gardner, Celustka, Giaccherini, Roberge, Borini.
Newcastle (4-3-3): Krul; Debuchy, Williamson, Dummett, Santon; Sissoko, Tiote, Cabaye; Gouffran, Ben Arfa, Remy. Subs: Elliot (gk), Haidara, Anita, Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi, Cisse.
