Full-time: Sunderland are going to Wembley
Full-time: Manchester United 2 Sunderland 1
(3-3 on aggregate, 2-1 on penalties)
SUNDERLAND are going to Wembley after a dramatic night at Old Trafford tonight ended with a 2-1 win on penalties.
A Jonny Evans header in the 37th minute forced the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final to extra-time.
Evans' goal, levelling the score 2-2, was enough to force the game to extra-time and just when it seemed United would go through after 120 minutes on the away goals rule ... Phil Bardsley struck.
Bardsley's hopeful drive was only spilled calamitously in by David De Gea and Sunderland had one foot in a Wembley final with just one minute remaining.
Yet somehow United, whose players were grounded on the floor in devastation seconds earlier, bounced up and grabbed a late, late second through Javier Hernandez to force the tie to penalties.
And then following a number of poor penalties, the stage was set for Vito Mannone to deny Rafael with the last spot-kick for the Black Cats to book a Wembley date with Manchester City on March 2.
