PARIS ST GERMAIN owner Nasser Al Khelaifi has revealed that Yohan Cabaye's nationality was a key factor behind his decision to shell out £20m to sign the French midfielder.

Cabaye is currently in Paris putting the finishing touches to his move to PSG after Newcastle owner Mike Ashley accepted an improved offer for his services late on Monday night.

The France international left the rest of the Newcastle squad at their team hotel in Norwich earlier today, and will play no part in this evening's Premier League game with Norwich City.

He should be confirmed as a PSG player within the next 24 hours, and Al Khelaifi has claimed it was always going to be important that he added French players to a squad that does not contain much homegrown talent.

The PSG owner said: "We chose Cabaye for three reasons. One, he is a very good player, very interesting to our eyes. Two, I have never met him myself but I was told that he is a good man as well.

"Three, he is French and it is very important for us to recruit French players to PSG, to bring them back to the French league."
