11:44pm

Peterborough have confirmed Lee Tomlin's last-gasp move to Middlesbrough. It's a loan deal, with a view to a permanent move at the end of the season.

Tomlin is a 25-year-old striker who has scored ten goals in 25 appearances for the League One side this season. Mind you, he's also received three red cards.

11:40pm

11:34pm

Sounding like there's one other Middlesbrough deal that went to the wire.

As revealed here on the blog earlier, Boro have spent the last few hours trying to engineer a deal for Peterborough striker Lee Tomlin.

The Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony has admitted his club accepted a bid for a player, but admits he currently does not know whether the paperwork went through on time.

And so the wait goes on....

11:29pm

Tweet from Hartlepool's James Poole ‏@JaPoole10 "Buzzing for my good pal @JackBaldwin_6. Will miss him a hell of a lot but Peterborough have got themselves some player!"

11:22pm

New Middlesbrough signing Danny Graham has lost his way since leaving Swansea, failing to score in half a season or so with Sunderland and rapidly falling out of favour at Hull.

He's got a proven track record at Championship level though, and will be determined to get his career back on track.

You'd certainly back him to score more goals in the second half of the season than Emnes would have done.

11:17pm

Finally, the worst-kept deadline day secret is out. Sunderland have confirmed that Danny Graham has joined Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season.

Graham started his career at Rockliffe Park, so although it's taken quite a while, things have finally gone full circle now.

11:08pm

Hartlepool boss Colin Cooper has been speaking about Jack Baldwin's surprise move to Peterborough.

Cooper said: "We didn’t want to sell Jack but when the approach was made by Peterborough earlier this week he made it clear that it was an opportunity he was interested in.

"We have spent time trying to encourage him to stay but once his mind was made up to progress his career in League One, our job was to get the best possible deal for Hartlepool United.

“I spoke about it with the Chairman and the Chief Executive and we all agreed that the deal we’ve been able to finalise tonight after several days of negotiation was in the best financial and beneficial interests of the Football Club and the player.”

11:07pm

There's been one big shock right on the 11pm deadline with Hartlepool United selling centre-half Jack Baldwin to Peterborough United for £500,000.

It'll be a huge loss for Pools, who have lost one of the most highly-rated young defenders in the Football League.

But £500,000 is an awful lot of money to turn down - and in the end, Pools just couldn't do it.

10:50pm

It'll be interesting to see whether Emnes gets much of a look in now that he's left Middlesbrough for Swansea.

They've been tracking him for the best part of three seasons, only for their interest to ebb at various stages.

Former Boro chief scout Dave Leadbetter has never stopped banging the drum though, and Emnes has finally decamped to South Wales.

He'll have to play a damn sight better than he has so far this season if he wants to make it in the Premier League though.

10:36pm

Swansea have confirmed Marvin Emnes' loan move from Middlesbrough on their official website.

The move is subject to international clearance and rubber-stamping from the Premier League, but both of those things should be a formality.

It's a loan until the end of the season - but there's an option to make things permanent come the summer.

10:27pm

Swansea statement on Emnes move from Middlesbrough: "Marvin Emnes is set to return to Swansea City after agreeing a loan deal from Middlesbrough that is now subject to Premier League and international clearance.
"Emnes, who proved a popular figure with the squad during his earlier spell with the Swans, knows the set-up and style of play well.
"That familiarity should enable him to settle in immediately as the Swans embark on a busy schedule in the Barclays Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup.
"The former Sparta Rotterdam star will provide competition out wide for manager Michael Laudrup, while he will also bolster the Great Dane's options up front."

10:16pm

Stand by Middlesbrough fans. Marvin Emnes' loan move to Swansea City is about to be confirmed - as is Danny Graham's loan move to the Riverside.

9:59pm

One deal with Sunderland connections - Oldham Athletic have just signed Jon Stead on loan.

9:47pm

Middlesbrough are still locked in talks aimed at bringing in Danny Graham, who has spent the first half of the season on loan at Hull City from Sunderland.

They're still hopeful, but it sounds like it's proving a tricky deal to pull off because three clubs are involved and Graham's wages are quite high.

As a result, they're looking at alternatives, and Peterborough's Lee Tomlin, who has been a target in the past, is back on the agenda.

9:39pm

9:33pm

Away from the North-East, Crystal Palace are putting the seal on deals for Tom Ince, Joe Ledley and Scott Dann.

That's looks like a pretty good day for a club who are giving themselves every chance of avoiding the drop this season.

Meanwhile, at another London club, Dimitar Berbatov has left Fulham to join French side Monaco.

9:17pm

Stoke chairman Peter Coates has just spoke to Five Live about the breakdown of Lee Cattermole's proposed move from Sunderland.

Coates said: "We thought that was going to happen. It hasn't happened and we are not quite sure why. We don't know why it hasn't gone ahead.

"I'm not quite sure why there's been a change. We thought there was a deal on, but now there isn't. I can only assume it came from Sunderland rather than the player."

The Advertiser Series: Lee Cattermole

8:59pm

There's two hours of the window still to go, but it's looking like that's it as far as Sunderland are concerned.

Lee Cattermole and Craig Gardner are both expected to remain at the Stadium of Light, and there aren't likely to be any last-minute arrivals to follow Liam Bridcutt's £3m move from Brighton this morning.

All a bit of a damp squib in the end, but Sunderland's squad certainly looks stronger at the end of the month than it did at the start of it.

8:29pm

I've never known so much confusion about the identity of one player's agent.

Sky were suggesting the Lee Cattermole deal might be back on because a certain agent turned up at Stoke's training ground - but he's not the person who represents the Sunderland midfielder.

Other than that, though, bang on.

As things stand, Sunderland are adamant that Cattermole will still be their player when the transfer window closes in two-and-a-half hours time.

8:09pm

If, as looks increasingly likely, Marvin Emnes joins Swansea, it's expected to be initially on loan until the end of the season.

The Dutchman has had his moments for Middlesbrough, but he's never quite lived up to the promise he's sporadically displayed.

The Advertiser Series: In form: Marvin Emnes has started the season with four goals in two games

7:43pm

Away from the North-East, there's breaking news in West Yorkshire that suggests Leeds United have sacked Brian McDermott.

Apparently, their new Italian owner is set to install former Middlesbrough defender Gianluca Festa as their new boss.

7:33pm

Here's the thoughts of Brighton Argus writer Andy Naylor on Sunderland signing Liam Bridcutt from Albion.

Brighton writer Andy Naylor: Bridcutt is 'ideal' for Sunderland

7:31pm

Sounding like Marvin Emnes' proposed move from Middlesbrough to Swansea is well down the line now.

Boro have been toying with the idea of selling Emnes for God knows how many transfer windows - with Swansea generally the club on the opposite end of the phone - but it finally looks like the dreadlocked Dutchman is going to be heading for South Wales.

Danny Graham is expected to sign on loan from Sunderland, via Hull, before tonight's deadline - but might Emnes' departure mean the money is suddenly available for two forwards to come in?

Watch this space...

7:22pm

Sunderland's Gus Poyet has taken time out to talk about Nacho Scocco and Liam Bridcutt, who have both signed for the Black Cats over the last 24 hours.

The Advertiser Series: Disaster banner Bridcutt's disaster.jpg for the homepage

Poyet said: “The idea with Liam is many, many things. One, how important it is to have a British player.

“It’s important that we got him at that age and at the price we got him for, and he knows the way we want to play and understands the game.

“When you put it all together, it’s a great acquisition.”

He added: “We grew up at the same time at Brighton – growing together as a team, a group of players and a group of staff, understanding of the game and making him better and better.

“He was part of that process, which will make it easier for him to play with us.”

“Nacho is a player who can bring plenty of things around the box,” Poyet added.
“We need to use him at the right time in the right games for him to start getting into English football.”

6:41pm

There was talk - seemingly scurrilous - that Connor Wickham has returned to Sheffield Wednesday on loan. I've had nothing confirmed here, and I believe it would be unlikely as Wednesday have already signed Benik Afobe from Arsenal after Sunderland recalled Wickham last week.

Lee Cattermole is staying at Sunderland, after his potential deal with Stoke City has fallen through.

Big news, that.

6:34pm

PSG midfielder Yohan Cabaye (still sounds odd) will make his debut tonight for the Parisiens. Meanwhile, his old club, Newcastle, look set to sign nobody in his stead. Sounds remarkably familiar to 2011 when they allowed Andy Carroll to leave without a replacement.

Is Shefki Kuci available?

6:29pm

Sunderland have had a bid for Geoff Cameron - the USA international Stoke defender - rejected by the Potters.

He played right-back on Wednesday night but I believe he can also play centre-half. Decent player.

6:23pm

Interesting noises about Sunderland midfielders Lee Cattermole and Craig Gardner. It is understood that both could move out tonight, which would leave the Black Cats midfield extremely thin on the ground. With that in mind, Gus Poyet surely must have replacements in mind?

6:16pm

In non-North-East transfer news, Osvaldo - Southampton's record signing - has joined Juventus on loan. That is after he was suspended by the Saints for an altercation with Jose Fonte during training.

Middlesbrough's Given talks hit a snag

The Advertiser Series: Shay Given

6:06pm

Big question on everyone's lips tonight involves Lee Cattermole and Stoke.

That question being: How will he get to Stoke from the North-East?

Commonly-held opinion is that he'd go across the M62 and down the M6 before linking on to the ring road from there, but for me that would be foolish. A1 is the only way, avoiding the roadworks in place over the M62 and coming off at the A50. It's plain sailing for him from there.

5:34pm

A fee has been agreed between Sunderland and Stoke for Lee Cattermole. It was coming, but it looks like it has finally arrived.

He must now decide whether to scrap the chance of a Capital One Cup final appearance for a deal at a club who clearly want him long term.

5:33pm

Stoke City have agreed a fee for Lee Cattermole, so that's a deal that will now happen before the 11pm deadline.

Cattermole is already in the Potteries, so there should be plenty of time for him to pass a medical and agree personal terms.

The big question now, will Sunderland sign another midfielder?

Cardiff have apparently had a £4m bid rejected for Leeds striker Ross McCormack

4:47pm

4:45pm

Not great news on the Shay Given front with Middlesbrough I'm afraid as talks with Aston Villa appear to have hit an impasse.

Boro are trying to set up a new loan deal that would see Given remain at the Riverside until the end of the season.

However, that would mean Villa losing the right to recall the Ireland international if they wanted to, and they're reluctant for that to happen.

If there isn't a new loan arrangement today, then Given will have to return to Villa Park when his existing loan expires on February 28 - and there'll be no chance of them extending it beyond that point.

Then Kevin Doyle seemed the most likely. Then both of them together, wouldn't that have been good?

That means Boro are having to put all their eggs in to ther Graham basket, so to speak! Remember August? I can see this Graham deal - or whoever - going right to the wire. Confirmation might not even arrive until after 11pm.

Kevin Doyle and Danny Graham are the main targets for Boro. It's worth noting, like previously reported by The Northern Echo, that Cardiff's Andrea Cornelius is also an option.

The £8.5m buy from Copenhagen has seen his proposed loan move back to Denmark fall through because of his wages. That could still lead to a switch to Teesside late on.

Another name to have emerged is Feyenoord's Lex Immers.

But Middlesbrough are only allowed one more British based loan deal. That would mean if Middlesbrough are to bring in more than one player today, it is likely that one or two will be permanent additions. That is not ideally what Boro want.

Paul Fraser will be up to get a live update from Gus Poyet at 2pm. Poyet could still make a deadline day move for Ross McCormack if Steven Fletcher or Lee Cattermole moves on.

Middlesbrough look set for a busy day. Danny Graham and Kevin Doyle most likely arrivals. Also interest yesterday in Graham Dorrans.

Boro also need to do a deal for Shay Given to keep him until the end of the season from Aston villa.

At Newcastle nothing seems on at the moment. There could still be late movement for Papiss Cisse if tentative interest strengthens.

Watch this space. It's deadline day! Anything can happen ...

Does anyone know if any pub is showing the game live, in the Bishop Auckland/Barnard Castle/Darlington area?
