Donachie resigns from Newcastle post
Updated 9:44pm Thursday 6th February 2014 in Sport
WILLIE DONACHIE quit Newcastle United tonight - just hours after it was revealed he had been suspended for allegedly striking a player.
The Magpies' Under-21s team manager is reported to have hit young defender Remie Streete in the immediate aftermath of last Monday's 2-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
There are no further details on the reputed incident. Streete, a 19-year-old defender, became a regular in the reserves towards the end of the 2010-11 season.
Donachie is a former Manchester City left-back and was appointed as the Magpies' assistant director of their academy in 2009 before taking charge of the reserve team in October 2011.
Earlier today it was announced the 62-year-old had been suspended, but a club statement issued tonight revealed his departure.
The statement read: “Newcastle United can confirm that Willie Donachie has resigned from his position as reserve team manager with immediate effect. The club will be making no further comment.”
