Sunderland v Manchester City: Capital One Cup Final

This live event has finished

3:59pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

A podium is being hastily erected on the Wembley pitch, tickertape machines being wheeled into place.

Manchester City's players will approach the Royal Box just above us here, and receive the trophy before taking it down on to the pitch in front of the City fans who, to their credit, have been in fine voice today.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are still out on the pitch, downtrodden, downhearted, defeated but not destroyed.

This was not the result they wanted, the result they hoped for, but they had a good go at it and, for 50 minutes, were in the lead.

3:53pm

Manchester City 3 Sunderland 1

The dream has died for Sunderland fans. Despite taking the early lead through Fabio Borini's lovely finish, Manchester City's extra quality shone through in the end.

Yaya Toure's equaliser was sublime and then the Capital One Cup was sealed with further goals from Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas.

Sunderland were brilliant in the first half, but lacked that little but extra after the restart to keep out City.

3:52pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

The Sunderland fans remaining - and there are many - are singing to the end, scarves and flags aloft. They're proud to be here, the team has performed well, and they are determined to let them know.

3:48pm

Manchester City 3 (Navas 90) Sunderland 1

Game over. After Fletcher completely wasted a great chance to equalise, City showed how to finish just moments later.

Yaya Toure broke, eventually played in Jesus Navas and the Spaniard fired low and beyond Mannone.

3:48pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

Game, set and match. City score their third of the game, Pantilimon comes up from the back to celebrate with the City players, while some Sunderland fans quietly make good their escape from Wembley.

3:44pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

Negredo coming on for City, to cries of 'Beast' from the blue end of the ground.

3:42pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

Very quiet among the Sunderland fans now, the City end in full voice, they're thinking they can see this one out. Six minutes on the clock.

3:39pm

Manchester City 2 Sunderland 1

The Black Cats are in need of something special now. Just nine minutes left and City look likeliest to alter the scoreline.

There is still time, but Sunderland have lost that edge going forward following the withdrawals of Larsson, Johnson and Cattermole.

3:31pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

Giaccherini coming on for Sunderland it would seem, just been called back from warming up.

3:17pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

Noise level is piercing the eardrums now. City holding their scarves aloft creating a sea of blue - but Sunderland fans still singing their hearts out. Gus Poyet's ordered a double, he's bringing two on to attempt to wrestle this back in Sunderland's favour.

3:14pm

Manchester City 2 (Nasri 56) Sunderland 1

And now it's two for City. Sunderland now find themselves behind.

Aguero took down a long ball, played down to Kolarov. His delivery deflected in to the path of Nasri and the Frenchman has powered beyond Mannone.

3:13pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

Predictably, City fans doing the Poznan, smoke bomb set off in the City end - and they're all going doubly mental now.

3:13pm

Manchester City 1 (Toure 55) Sunderland 1

The Advertiser Series:

What an equalsier. Yaya Toure has just curled in the sweetest of right foot shots from 25 yards in to Mannone's top right corner.

Incredible goal. Now Sunderland need to regroup and go again.

3:08pm

Manchester City 0 Sunderland 1

Strong start from City to the second half. Mannone has denied Silva already. But Ki has just forced Pantilimon in to a save from distance.

Sunderland still look strong and confident.

3:05pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

Bit of rain coming down here. They say that jars with the usual cup final weather. But it rained in 1973... Just saying, just saying.

Half-time whistle greeted by a massive cheer from the Sunderland fans. 45 to play. Act 1 belongs to those in red and white.

2:47pm

Manchester City 0 Sunderland 1

Sunderland - yes, Sunderland - are half way there. The whistle has blown for the interval with Fabio Borini's brilliant tenth minute finish  separating the two teams.

There are now 45 minutes remaining for Sunderland to hold on to this slender lead - and they deserve it.

2:46pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

Very tense here, Sunderland fans willing the referee to blow the whistle. A half-time 1-0 lead would be spot on right now.

2:40pm

Manchester City 0 Sunderland 1

Major let off for City there. Borini clearly offside when he went through to meet Larsson's flick on. No flag.#

Borini should have tested Pantilimon but Kompany did well to track back and concede just a corner.

Sunderland still worrying City. Could have extended their lead.

2:36pm

Richard Mason at Wembley:

City have seen a little more of the ball these last few minutes, and the Sunderland fans are probably starting to realise the enormity of this. An hour to play, an hour to hang on. Fingernails. What fingernails?

2:29pm

It is so loud in here that at times you can't hear the referee's whistle.

Nasri denied by Mannone. This time after City counter-attacked. Aguero found space down the right to deliver after Sunderland had lost possession in the final third.

2:25pm

Manchester City 0 Sunderland 1

City looked rattled. Samir Nasri has just overhit a ten-yard pass for a goalkick. Sunderland defending strongly.

Cattermole setting the tone in the middle with Adam Johnson and Borini causing problems to the City defence when they attack.

2:23pm

We're sat in the press box among the City fans at Wembley, but Sunderland are managing to drown them out. They perhaps outnumber the City fans, and certainly outsinging.

2:20pm

Another rendition of I Can't Help Falling In Love With You from the Sunderland fans, who, for brevity, call it Wise Men Say.

Not many wise men predicted a Sunderland win today but the 40,000 fans scattered around Wembley are daring to dream.

Most of the fans I spoke to last night while out and about in London just wanted Sunderland to give a good account of themselves. And a goal. They've got both so far.

Sunderland fans doing the Poznan now. City's fans are not too happy. Not sure why - they nicked it themselves anyway!

2:11pm

Manchester City 0 Sunderland 1 (Borini 10)

Incredible scenes around Wembley. Johnson's great ball over the top was met by Borini, who fended off the challenge of Kompany.

Borini went clean through, had a lot to do and applied the cutest of finishes with the outside of his right boot.

2:11pm

Sunderland 1 Manchester City 0

The Sunderland end erupts, and half of the City end follows suit - seems that there are a few Sunderland fans in the Club Wembley seats over the opposite end.

2:09pm

Manchester City 0 Sunderland 0

First counter attack from Sunderland. Lee Cattermole broke, played a lovely ball out wide for Borini but chance came to nothing after an offside.

Then City attacked at the other end. Vito Mannone made a fine save down to his right to deny Aguero.

2:06pm

Sunderland 0 Manchester City 0

The Blue shirts, as expected, have had the ball for the majority of the early minutes. Sunderland have not really been out of their half yet.

2:02pm

Sunderland 0 Man City 0

Fantastic noise from the Sunderland supporters in the opening few minutes. Try telling them right now that the cup competitions don't matter....

2:02pm

Another surprise from Poyet. Sunderland have started wityh Jack Colback on the left of a four-man midfield. Seb Larsson through the middle with Ki Sung Yueng.

Lee Cattermole crucial this afternoon as the holding man between defence and midfield, where the likes of Yaya Toure and David Silva will be looking to exploit.

The players are in the tunnel, the League Cup trophy sits proudly between the technical areas. Less than ten minutes until kick-off.

Sunderland must avoid conceding an early goal. If they can do that ... this could be their year.

1:47pm

There's a giant Sunderland flag currently being passed over the heads of the fans in the main Sunderland end to the left of where we're sitting at Wembley.

On the field, there are giant banners displaying the crests of Sunderland and Manchester City.

Not long now until the players will be on the field.....

1:13pm

I'm actually surprised Jozy Altidore is not up front for Sunderland. He he has been poor, but he has been poor most of the season and still played.

Big call from Gus Poyet to put Fabio Borini up front today. It is where the Italian wants to play, so he has the big occasion to justify the change.

Paul Fraser

1:13pm

Manchester City stick with Costel Pantilimon for the cup final, with Demichelis and Kompany the centre-halves.

Sergio Aguero will partner Edin Dzeko.

MANCHESTER CITY: Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Kompany, Demichelis, Kolarov, Nasri, Toure, Fernandinho, Silva, Aguero, Dzeko. Subs: Hart, Clichy, Lescott, Milner, Garcia, Navas, Negredo

1:09pm

Sunderland team news announced, and there's a couple of surprises. Firstly, Fabio Borini starts up front with Seb Larsson coming in to play on the flank, while Jozy Altidore is left out altogether.

Steven Fletcher is on the bench.

SUNDERLAND (4-5-1): Mannone; Bardsley, O'Shea, Brown, Alonso; Johnson, Cattermole, Colback, Ki, Larsson; Borini. Subs: Ustari, Gardner, Fletcher, Celustka, Giaccherini, Vergini, Scocco.

Sunderland's end of Wembley is filling up faster than Manchester City's. An hour to kick-off, City fans have done this before. But for Sunderland's supporters, this is their first trip to the new Wembley and they are making the most of it.

The teams will be out in the next half an hour or so.

Sunderland's main selection issues come up front, with Gustavo Poyet having to decide whether to start with Jozy Altidore or Steven Fletcher up front.

Alternatively, he could go with Fabio Borini in a sole attacking role, with Emmanuele Giaccherini starting in midfield.

Time will tell....

With most neutral tickets having fallen into North-Eastern hands, it's estimated there'll be more than 40,000 people in here backing the Black Cats.

Sky have been filming their Sunday Supplement show live from the press room here at Wembley, so the actual Capital One Cup has been on display. Let's hope John O'Shea is lifting it above his head later this afternoon.

There's also a giant inflatable trophy on the field, which must be 20 foot high. Even for O'Shea, that'll take some lifting.....

So here we are then. Sunderland at Wembley. Just savour those words and let them sink in.

As you'll probably know by now, London was quite a sight last night with thousands of Sunderland supporters flocking to Covent Garden and partying into the early hours.

The police effectively had to shut the streets for a few hours because it was so busy, but the atmosphere was friendly and celebratory with no trouble or disorder reported at all.

A huge success all round.

Now though, the real business begins.

Wembley Way was packed with Sunderland supporters as we got off the tube at Wembley Park station - I don't think it's any exaggeration to say there has hardly been a Manchester City fan in sight.

Just over two hours to go, and the butterflies in the stomach are getting bigger....
