RELEASED Middlesbrough goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler has signed for Shrewsbury Town.

Leutwiler, 25, was told he would not be getting a new contract at the Riverside Stadium this summer and has been looking for a new club.

The Shrews’ boss Micky Mellon was the first to make a serious move and has agreed a two-year contract with the Swiss shot-stopper.

Leutwiler is determined to make a success of his time in Shropshire. He said: “Once I spoke to the manager I had no hesitation making the decision. I am a very positive goalkeeper. I always try to give my 200 per cent on the pitch.”

Leutwiler is a former Switzerland Under-20 international and moved to Middlesbrough from FC Basel in 2012.

But he only made three starts for Middlesbrough, two in the Carling Cup, and he was always likely to move on after Aitor Karanka had decided to secure the services of Dimi Konstantopoulos and Tomas Mejias on long-term term deal.

Karanka still has Olympian Jason Steele in his first team squad too, so as things stand the three of them will be battling to start the new campaign as Middlesbrough’s No 1.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are still monitoring Diego Perotti’s situation at Sevilla.

The 25-year-old is believed to be available for a cut-price £3.5m after a disappointing seventh year in Spain, when he was farmed out on loan to Boca Juniors. The Argentine has been struggling with thigh and calf muscle strains over the last couple of campaigns.
