JACK COLBACK and Siem de Jong will make their first Newcastle United appearances as the Magpies kick off their pre-season programme at Oldham Athletic this evening.

Colback will play at the heart of midfield after making the short switch from Sunderland this summer, while de Jong will wear the captain's armband a week after completing his move from Ajax.

Another of Newcastle's summer signings, Ayoze Perez, is also expected to make an appearance after being named among the substitutes at the newly-renamed Sports Direct.com Park.

There is no place in the squad for Remy Cabella, who has returned to France after completing a £7m move from Montpellier yesterday, or Daryl Janmaat, whose £5m switch from Feyenoord should be confirmed tomorrow after he completed a medical on Tyneside earlier today.

With Tim Krul and Cheik Tiote still on an extended break after their World Cup exploits, and Fabricio Coloccini not involved in the squad, there is a youthful look to Newcastle's line-up.

However, there is also experience in the shape of Vurnon Anita, Steven Taylor, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Yoan Gouffran, all of whom will be hoping to stake an early claim for a place in next season's starting line-up.

NEWCASTLE (4-4-1-1): Alnwick; Anita, S Taylor, Yanga-Mbiwa, Dummett; Gouffran, Abeid, Colback, Aarons; de Jong; Armstrong.

Subs: Woodman (gk), Haidara, Streete, Satka, Bigirimana, Ameobi, Vuckic, Perez.
