NEWCASTLE UNITED manager Alan Pardew remains confident of adding another striker to his squad this summer, but insisted he will only move for players that will suit the club.

The Magpies continued their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday courtesy of Ayoze Perez’s second half strike after reports surfaced that the club have had an improved offer for Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette turned down.

Pardew is keen to bring another striker to St James’ Park and had identified Lacazette as one of his top targets. The Ligue One club are not keen to sell the striker, however, and have reportedly turned down an improved offer, believed to be in the region of £12-15m.

The 23-year-old has been offered a deal to prolong his stay at Lyon, but his unwillingness to sign an improved contract has kept Newcastle’s hopes of agreeing a deal alive.

Pardew has already boosted his attacking options with the signing of Emmanuel Riviere and Perez, but he remains in the market for another ahead of the new campaign.

The Magpies are still considering making a renewed offer for Loic Remy, whose proposed move to Liverpool collapsed over the weekend, but club officials are reportedly concerned about the French international’s commitment to the club having rejected an offer to sign permanently earlier in the summer.

Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains a target, but Borussia Dortmund want to re-coup at least £12m if they sell the striker they signed 12 months ago.

When asked whether a new move for Remy could materialise, Pardew said: “I think looking at our squad we’re still shy of a striker and that would be ideal if we could get one that suited the club and we’ll take that forward.

“I’m really pleased with the work we’ve done this summer. The squad is far removed from the team that finished last season and rightly so we’ve invested very well.

“I didn’t expect that to happen (Remy), I thought that deal was sealed and done which I’m sure the agent and player thought as well so I’m surprised that the medical team had a problem.

“We are monitoring things as we go and it’s difficult when you ask questions about one player because I thought our young players were terrific.”

Obertan, making his first appearance of pre-season despite speculation that he will be moved on this summer, crossed in from the right early on, but the hosts were able to clear their lines.

Kirkland had rarely been tested in the opening exchanges and it was at the other end where Elliot’s goal came under attack.

Giles Coke, Atdhe Nuhiu and Joe Mattock all went close to opening the score before Elliot pulled off a superb save to deny Gary Madine’s header from point blank range on the half hour mark.

The hosts should have taken a 38th minute lead when the ball fell to Sam Hutchinson inside the area, but his rising shot crashed off the bar.

The deadlock wasn’t broken until the 66th minute and despite the hosts enjoying the bulk of the chances, it was Newcastle who took the lead.

Elliot found Obertan with a long throw and he played in Perez to finish low past Kirkland from inside the area.
