VITO MANNONE has been struck down by illness so he is unable to make an appearance for Sunderland in tonight’s final friendly in the Algarve with Vitoria Setubal.

Gustavo Poyet’s plan was to give the Italian goalkeeper the full 90 minutes against Vitoria after Costel Pantilimon played the last friendly at the Estadio de Albufeira against CD Nacional.

Pantilimon will play again as he looks to prove he deserves to start the Premier League opener with West Brom on August 16.

Right-back Billy Jones will sit out after withdrawing at half-time on Wednesday with tightness in his legs. Midfielder Lee Cattermole will start on the bench, with Liam Bridcutt given the role in the middle.

Greek winger Charis Mavrias will figure for the third game in a row, this time from the start, while Wes Brown drops out to allow Valentin Roberge to start in defence.

Sunderland (4-1-4-1): Pantilimon; Mavrias, Roberge, O’Shea, van Aanholt; Bridcutt; Johnson, Gomez, Giaccherini, Wickham; Fletcher. Subs: Ba, N’Diaye, Brown, Cattermole, Ba, Dixon (gk).
