SUNDERLAND are reportedly close to signing Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell.
The England international is understood to be on Wearside today to hold talks over a move to the Stadium of Light.
Black Cats head coach Gus Poyet has been in the market for a central midfielder after losing Craig Gardner, Ki Sung-Yeung and Jack Colback at the end of last season.
There is an interest in Cardiff City’s Jordon Mutch, but it appears Poyet has made Rodwell his number one target.
Sunderland are also waiting to hear whether Fabio Borini will be returning to the club next season.
The Wearsiders agreed a fee with Liverpool for the Italian striker, but he is yet to agree a move back to the Stadium of Light.
