Boro's Clayton deal hits a Butterfield snag - but still likely to happen

The Advertiser Series: Terrier? Huddersfield are keen to have Jacob Butterfield as Adam Clayton's replacement Terrier? Huddersfield are keen to have Jacob Butterfield as Adam Clayton's replacement

ADAM CLAYTON’S £1.5m-plus move from Huddersfield Town has been delayed after it emerged Jacob Butterfield forms part of the deal.

Boro are understood to have agreed to let Butterfield move in the opposite direction but the former Norwich City man has not rushed in to anything.

Clayton, a centre midfielder, is keen to head for the Riverside and he would end Middlesbrough’s summer-long search to add him to Aitor Karanka’s ranks.

But Huddersfield, who insisted on Tuesday night that the transfer was not agreed, are keen to have a replacement lined up before giving the 25-year-old the go-ahead to complete the switch he wants. Butterfield is the man the Terriers would prefer.

Middlesbrough, who confirmed the loan signing of Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo today, remain confident that they can conclude a deal for Clayton.
