ALAN Pardew admits Newcastle United should have left Aston Villa with more than a point.

The Magpies were held to a goalless draw at Villa Park yesterday lunchtime, despite dominating possession and chances.

The hosts failed to test Tim Krul throughout the 90 minutes, while Newcastle had a number of chances to score with Daryl Janmaat, Remy Cabella and Siem de Jong all going close.

The Magpies have now failed to score in their opening two games of the season, but Pardew admits his side should have returned to Tyneside with maximum points.

“We haven’t scored yet and that will be hanging over us but there was a lot of good play, a lot of good movement and we have got goals in this team.

“They were all trying so hard, though, and sometimes that’s not the way to score goals. There were a lot of good things ¬without the killer touch.

“It’s a shame we haven’t won – but I’m still smiling.”

Pardew was caught doing a funny dance on the touchline at Villa Park yesterday and an embarrassed Magpies boss revealed why he had done it.

“That was more for Remy (Cabella). I just felt he was trying too hard. He had a lot of pressure last week and I felt he was kind of tense.

“There were a couple of great moments where he didn’t deliver. That’s not like him. I tried to get him to play with a smile. I spoke to him at half-time but no, I didn’t do the dance in the dressing room.

“I’m hoping for a positive end to the transfer window. But the market is very difficult.”

Newcastle had Mike Williamson sent off in the 90th minute for a second bookable offence. He will miss Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup tie at Gillingham.
