ADAM Clayton returns to another former club when Middlesbrough visit Huddersfield Town this afternoon, but the midfielder is expecting a better reception than the one he received at Elland Road.

Clayton left Huddersfield to join Boro last month and will return to the John Smith’s Stadium for the first time today.

It will be the second time the 25-year-old has gone back to a former stamping ground having made his Middlesbrough debut in the defeat at Leeds United.

Clayton was booed as he came on as a second half substitute that day, while he was also on the receiving end of some abuse from the stands when he went back for the first time with the Terriers.

The Manchester-born midfielder admits it will be strange going back to the West Yorkshire club so soon after leaving, but whether he is given a good or bad reception, Clayton revealed he is looking forward to the game.

“It’s always strange going back to an old club,” he said.

“When I first went back to Elland Road it was a surreal experience. I don’t really know what to expect, because it’s so fresh, but hopefully we can get the three points and I can shake everyone’s hand after the game.

“Football fans pay their money to scout and scream whether they want to shout nice things or bad things. It’s up to them on the day.

“I’ve grown up being called every name under the sun from where I lived so it’s quite easy for me. I’ve been brought up a pretty good way. I went back to Elland Road and we got beat 5-1 and I had 35,000 fans signing not very nice things.

“I actually enjoyed that experience in a weird way. I said to my dad that if I get 35,000 fans all signing at me I must have done something right.

“I’m sure no one from Huddersfield will say I didn’t give 100 per cent when I was there. It’s all a pantomime really. I don’t mind. Hopefully I will get a nice reception of the fans especially.

“I don’t think I’ll get booed at Huddersfield. I think they will be more than fine with me so I’m looking forward to it.”

There have been some changes at Huddersfield since Clayton left with Chris Powell named the Terriers’ new boss after Mark Robbins was sacked following the opening game of the season.

Clayton believes Powell’s arrival will have given the squad a lift after a disappointing start, but the 25-year-old is confident his new team are well equipped to get a result.

He said: “Huddersfield are a good team. There were times last year when we battered teams and lost.

“They’re a funny little team. If they get it right they are a very solid team and with the new manager coming in they will be geared up for it and ready.

“We’ve got to match their intensity, but I think we’ve got a stronger squad so we should be alright on the day.”

Clayton is one of 12 summer arrivals and there could be more debuts in West Yorkshire with Yanic Wildschut and Jelle Vossen both in the squad, and the former Manchester City trainee has revealed both players have made a good impression.

“They both look good,” Clayton said. “Yanic is a character. He’s not shy and is getting involved already. Jelle looks good in training.

“The potential is there, but there’s potential in a lot of teams in this league. You’ve got to go out and do it.”
