SUNDERLAND RESERVES recorded one of their best results of the season as Mikael Mandron’s second-half strike secured a 1-0 win over Manchester City.
Mandron struck five minutes after the interval at Eppleton as a Sunderland development side that featured Charis Mavrias saw off a Manchester City line up that put five goals past German club Schalke earlier this month.
The Black Cats were the better side throughout, with Carl Lawson testing City goalkeeper Angus Gunn as early as the seventh minute.
Lawson saw another decent first-half effort parried, with Liam Agnew failing to convert the follow up, and while Mandron headed wide shortly before the interval, the striker made no mistake when presented with another chance at the start of the second half.
Martin Smith hammered a shot against the crossbar, and Mandron, who made a first-team appearance against Liverpool earlier this month, reacted quickest to head home the rebound.
Sunderland: Stryjek, Cartwright, T Robson, Agnew (Greenwood 50), McNamee, Beadling, Mavrias, Smith, Mandron, Honeyman, Lawson.
