GUS POYET insisted he will not walk away from Sunderland after watching his side fall to a humiliating 4-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

Burnley’s win over Manchester City in the late kick-off rubbed further salt into the Black Cats’ wounds as they are now only one point above the bottom three going into next weekend’s trip to West Ham.

Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor both bagged braces against a Sunderland side, whose performance in front of a near sell-out crowd was littered with shambolic defending.

Three supporters had to be ushered away by stewards after trying to storm the home dugout after Villa scored their third, while Poyet’s side were also booed on and off the field at the half time and full time whistles.

The Uruguayan head coach was quizzed over whether he would consider walking away after the game and said: “(It’s) Not even in question. It would be too easy to come here and blame everybody, but that is not me.

“I need to accept the responsibility. I pick the team, we train in a certain way, but then it is about Saturday at 3pm “I was not expecting this to happen, but that’s football I suppose. I am just trying to accept something for which I don’t have any explanation – what happened in the first half.

“I prefer not to go into details. I’m going to analyse the first half very carefully, and then we’ll see.”

Poyet cut a lonely figure in his technical figure throughout proceedings at the Stadium of Light and the head coach was happy to take full responsibility for the result.

He said: “I am responsible. If things go right, I am responsible and if things go wrong I am responsible. I don’t pick and choose.

“I hate people who pick and choose – they have too many faces.

“When you are responsible, you have to take it.”

Poyet also revealed there were no talks scheduled between him and owner Ellis Short “I don’t speak to the owner after every game, we speak when we need to speak,” the head coach added.
