Second half collapse sees Quakers reach new low

Darlington 0 Morecambe 4

DARLINGTON’S dismal season sank to it its lowest ebb last night as a second half collapse saw them crushed 4-0 at home to Morecambe.

The visitors had won only once on their travels until last night when they embarrassed Quakers who suffered their heaviest home defeat since May 2007 in front of the lowest ever league crowd at the The Northern Echo Arena.

There had been little between the sides during a drab first half, but second half errors led to four Morecambe goals on a nightmare evening for manager Steve Staunton.

He labelled the second half display “unacceptable” and his side have now conceded nine goals in two games following Saturday’s 5-2 defeat at Chesterfield.

Staunton admitted: “It’s very disappointing after the performances we have had of late. But the second half tonight was just unacceptable.

“We need to cut out mistakes, we’ve been saying it every week. Simple mistakes are killing us.

“We’ve got to take more responsibility collectively.

Every time we take a step forward we then take two or three back.

“We’ve got a young bunch of players and they are going to have to grow up pretty quickly.

Jeff Smith had a couple of chances in the first half, he was unlucky, but the second half....what can you say, it was not good enough.”

Those chances came midway through a truly awful opening 45 minutes which was played at glacial pace with little of note occurring until Smith had two shots at goal in quick succession.

After being played in by the recalled James Collins, Smith dribbled his way into the Morecambe penalty area before seeing his shot beaten away by keeper Barry Roche.

Seconds later Smith’s shot from the edge of the area skidded narrowly wide of the post and thereafter defences remained largely on top, reducing both teams to half chances.

From outside Darlington’s penalty area the Shrimps’ Stuart Drummond and Craig Stanley both fired wide of Nick Liversedge’s goal while at the other end Quakers’ David Davis had a shot diverted for a corner.

At the end of a half almost devoid of quality, Smith worked himself into a good position inside Morecambe’s penalty are but blazed over.

On 56 minute came the opening goal and, given the paucity of creativity from both sides, it was no surprise that it came via a defensive error.

On the edge of the Darlington penalty area right-back Corey Barnes was unable to control Jonathan Hogg’s pass which led to Phil Jevons collecting the loose ball and firing home.

Though Jevons’ strike was hardly merited, Quakers could hardly say they deserved the lead either. A goal, however, was much-needed to add some spark to a miserable encounter. But all it did was kickstart Morecambe and eight minutes later they had a match-clinching second with Laurence Wilson scoring on the counter attack.

Striker Paul Mullin escaped Steve Foster and sent Wilson racing away down the left.

With teenager Barnes out of position it allowed Morecambe’s left wing-back a free run at goal before firing a shot past Liversedge.

Liversedge pulled off a smart save from Mullin, but on 79 minutes came the third goal and again dire defending gifted Morecambe the strike.

Stanley’s free-kick appeared harmless but it reached the far post where an unmarked Drummond stabbed home and with five minutes to go Liversedge capped off an horrendous evening in fitting style.

He completely mis-kicked and could only watch as sub Wayne Curtis dribbled towards an empty net.

The fourth goal completed the rout which means Quakers’ are now eight points off third bottom Torquay United.

■ Staunton has a French player on trial and he last night confirmed Jamie Chandler’s loan from Sunderland has been terminated to free up space for a new player.

Mr Staunton has talked a good game up till now, the last two results should have told him that being a scout for the last two years was not enough to make him a coach at this level, just as watching it for 30 years wouldn't cut it for any fan. I had the pleasure in the 80's to watch Cyril Knowles, Dave Booth, Brian Little and Frank Gray coach with varying degrees of success. What he needs to do is take the players back to basics and walk them through various plays and strategies on the pitch, get an experienced defence coach and have the working together 7 days a week. Either that or get Brian as Director of Coaching. He we all know has the experience at this level and higher and lower.

Darlo
At the crossroads of despair!

Rock bottom Darlo's heads dropped after another big defeat and supporters who hoped of a revival realised this team is not capable of survival in this division .What we witnessed was a team on their way down to the Blue Square Leaque. Fans are losing heart and faith in this regime, Crowds are getting to a critical low level and many tonight were adamant they aren’t coming back. We wouldn’t need Stadium if that happened and Houghton still has big plans for it! Many disgruntled supporters left early including shoestring Singh with a smile on his face probably for dinner with Houghton & cronies to toast their “back on track scheduled plans” to sell off stadium to Tesco & others.

Darlington are left with a mountain to climb to steer clear of relegation trouble, Steve Staunton can only do so much with the limited budget he has been given. What’s the future? Time will tell but time is running out for the manager and team to get points and climb clear of relegation,,,,., The faithful few demoralised regular fans now realise, with this current team we are rooted to the bottom of leaque!

Well the final nail in our coffin, was hammered in last night. I thought I could get xmas over before talk of relegation, but even I must accept we are down. Morecambe are a poor team , so, what does that say of us. A group(I cannot stretch to using the word "team") of players even I struggle to name, as the squad numbers are all in the twenties and thirties. Basic ball control is gone, continually seeing Liversidge hammer the ball to a loan striker, who cannot have a chance of controling it in the wind made me think is there a "staunton game-plan?" I pray we will survive the drop, to be around in the Blue square!

I arrived back home from last nights game at 4am, working in london at the moment, i will not be going to anymore games until staunton's team starts passing the ball about on the pitch, hoof football, that is sunday league tactics from a pub team. when todd was in charge, at least the team was playing football, passing it around. sacking todd was a big mistake by our young chairman, who has alot to learn about the world of football. staunton makes statements like ie unacceptable, mistakes are killing us, young players need to grow up. this is also being said about the manager by fans ie staunton's hoof style of football is unacceptable, his team selection is killing us, young players need to grow up, maybe staunton needs to grow, maybe he is out of his depth and he needs to take a good hard look at himself and think.. maybe my training methods are wrong, my man management skills are zero etc. basic footballing mistakes are being made by in-experienced players, solution, these players are not ready for this level of football yet, so stop playing them staunton, using them as a excuse, after games and start playing some of the experienced players at the club, and maybe, just maybe the basic mistakes will go away and the team might just start picking up points. i would always play experienced players,(even if they are not in my 1st team plans, they are not training with the 1st team, are only 90% fit) ahead of young talented inexperienced players. and i can't believe(well i can, after last nights game) staunton is making basic footballing mistakes, in his team selections. the players look like they are scared to pass the ball about, they don't look confident with the ball, there is no-urgency on the pitch, there is lack of leadership out there. too many followers, not enough leaders. some of the players that played last night should never be on the pitch, they look unfit, can't pass, won't pass, they would not get into my local pub team. staunton has signed some of these players. the manager has a french player on trial, what difference is this going to make?, even if the french player is henry, this will not help the team as the managers tactics, team selection, training methods are all wrong, just look at the results of late, conceded 9 goals in the last 2 games and staunton still won't play or give some of the other players a chance at the club. staunton has to remember 1 important thing here... he was given a chance to come back into football management by our chairman, so why doesn't staunton give some of the other players at the club a chance to prove themselves, a run in the team, say 5 games and he might be surprised at what might just happen and he could change is mind about certain players, they might show him, that given the chance, they can help the team/him, climb up the table. if you don't give players a chance, how will the manager ever no if these players can cut it at this level. staunton you have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. take a chance with some of the other players you have not tried and forget about bringing anymore players in from lower league clubs, or from abroad. deal the cards you have been dealt with and you might just surprise yourself Mr Staunton. until the team starts playing football on the deck, win, lose or draw, i will not be attending anymore games, with my family, friends, until then.

Mr Staunton.....we need 11 team players not 11 individuals. I sincerely hope you are working them every spare minute of every day until the next game to get them working as a cohesive squad....yes they're young...yes there's inexperience....and guess what? It's your job to cement all that together!!

A couple of weeks ago I sent an e-mail about Mr Stauntons comments about preparing for next season. I said he should concentrate on this season and nothing else. Boy was I wrong. He (if he is still there which I very much doubt) should definitely start preparing the team for life not only in the Blue Square but even lower. Tuesday night was disgraceful but if you think that was bad then I have got news for you it will get much much worse.
