Time to reflect on heritage

THE Bishop of Durham dedicated two banners commemorating Wear Valley’s mining history last week.

At a special service in Auckland Castle’s chapel the restored Hole In The Wall banner was blessed by the Right Reverend Tom Wright.

The dedication was attended by former miners, councillors and Durham County Council chairman Brian Myers.

The banners, which represent the miners of Crook Colliery and others in Weardale, are to go on display at council offices in the county.

The bishop said their restoration is an opportunity to reflect on the region’s heritage.

He said: “In our region we have seen good times and bad. We have seen things flourish and we have seen them shut down, take for example, what is happening at Corus.

“These banners that we are dedicating today are not only something that make us look back, but something that make us look forward with hope.”

Lord Derek Foster said: “The banners are important because they celebrate the glorious mining history of this county over almost 300 years and they remind us of the vibrancy of mining communities.”
