AS the Olympic Games in China came to a close on Sunday a ceremony was organised by Sedgefield Borough Council to launch a four year run-in to the London Games.
The £2.8m South Durham Gymnastics Centre at Spennymoor Leisure Centre has already been designated as an official training centre for 2012.
On Sunday, three girls who represent Great Britain and use the centre performed beam exercises at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon. Beth Donaldson, Amy Tinkler and Kelsey Garbutt all performed in the shadow of Chinese Locomotive the C2, a recent arrival at the museum for a Chinese cultural programme.
The trio all have high hopes of making the 2012 Games and handed over the flag of China, the Union Jack and the 2012 official Olympic flag to civic dignitaries.
Sedgefield Borough Mayor John Robinson, said: "It's full steam ahead to 2012 now. It's an honour to be a training venue."
