WELL done Steve Gibson, Middlesbrough FC owner, for calling out Tory mayor Ben Houchen and backing Labour’s Chris McEwan as the best prospect for the next Tees Valley mayor, “Teesworks deal is unforgivable” (Echo, Apr 24).
Mr Gibson - an international business giant - says Houchen’s mediocre management of the Teesworks regeneration site is “unforgivable”.
Houchen’s £500m giveaway to two private business partners, he says, “has gifted away the enhancement of our children’s and grandchildren’s future”.
Put simply, he is saying that our children and grandchildren are being robbed of half a billion pounds.
More worryingly, Houchen naively closes his ears to sage criticism, saying: “It’s a deal I would do every day of the week”.
On May 2 we have the chance to dispatch Ben Houchen to the bin of tawdry history and welcome in a new era of transparency, integrity, humility and trust.
It will be better for the children.
Malcolm Wright, Darlington.
